Actor’s union Equity is stepping up pressure on producers to produce a wider variety of roles for women. Too often, they say, women are shown only as carers, victims or sex objects.
As a writer I find it more interesting to create distinctive characters. Indeed, this is what producers say they want. Too often, though, they get cold feet and retreat to the tried and tested. Hopefully Equity’s pressure will give some the courage of their convictions.
The campaign could usefully extended to other stereotypes. How often do you see on stage or screen an arts-loving city trader, a sociable IT expert, an interesting accountant or even a practical and grounded actor? All exist. Especially the interesting accountant.
